John Paul Jones Covers Led Zeppelin For a Good Cause

by | Feb 19, 2022 | News

Musicians have never been afraid to address social concerns through song. There is a long list of past and current performers who have taken a stand on issues such as politics and climate change. The latest to pop up is this cover of Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” featuring over a dozen musical contributors.

John Paul Jones is a multi-instrumentalist most famously known as a the bassist and keyboardist for the Mighty Led Zeppelin. For this cover (which the original Zep track is in itself actually a reworking of a 1929 song about the Great Mississippi Flood—the most destructive river flooding in U.S. history), Jones recruited a host of special guests including husband and wife blues rockers Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.

The video was created for a non-profit organization known as Playing For Change, and is accepting donations on the YouTube Page. The funds will go to “organizations that prioritize real time solutions that facilitate environmental justice and sustainability, including Conservation International, American Rivers, World Wildlife Fund, REVERB, and the PFC Foundation” according to the info next to the clip..

From the Playing For Change website: “Built on the belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome the differences that divide us, Playing For Change inspires and unites people through song. Over the past 20 years, Playing For Change has discovered unique talent, breathtaking performances, and amazing stories from all parts of the world.”
