“Beginnings” Chicago Cover by Leonid & Friends — Video of the Week 03/15/21

by | Mar 15, 2021 | Video Of The Week

Part of what I enjoy about writing this feature every Sunday night is exploring the deep catalog of bands I’ve never even heard of before. I’m on the lookout constantly, videos get suggested, and as a result I always end up finding some serious talent, which is why I’m doing this in the first place.

Our pick this week could fall into the category of Tribute Band, although their YouTube channel features covers by other artists as well. But Russia’s Leonid & Friends focus primarily on the music of the band Chicago, and they absolutely knock it out of the park.

Leonid & Friends is the brainchild of Leonid Vorodyev — the bass player in the band. He also transcribes all of the music just by watching the Chicago videos, sings backup, handles the producing, mixing and mastering, as well as the production of the videos. Whew! But perhaps his greatest skill, and most evident when sifting though the band’s catalog, is recruiting top-notch musicians.

There are so many songs to choose from with this band. Their version of “If You Leave Me Now,” complete with a 9-piece string section and a french horn, is simply gorgeous.  “25 or 6 to 4” is rock solid. And “Saturday in the Park” will bring you right back to the 70s.

But we went with one of our favorite Chicago songs; 1) Because it features a full horn section and 2) Because it’s a masterclass in performing a cover song on video. Watch the clip below and then share this article!
